Bio
Dr. Valentine Smith, a Caribbean sociologist, researcher, and educator known for his humility and compassion. He holds a B.Sc., M.Sc., MPhil, and PhD in Sociology from The University of the West Indies (UWI), Trinidad and Tobago. With a career spanning decades, Dr. Smith has dedicated himself to the study and teaching of Criminology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, and Mediation, with a particular focus on Caribbean social issues.
He has lectured at The University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus, Trinidad and Tobago, where he taught undergraduate courses including Introduction to Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, and Criminology, Psychology. At the postgraduate level, he contributed to the Mediation programme, exploring critical themes such as Caribbean social development. Dr. Smith has also been a faculty member at the Cipriani College of Labour and Cooperative Studies since 1996, where he has taught introduction to Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology, and other foundational courses. Additionally, he taught in the Security Administration Diploma Programme offered by the Faculty Centre in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis. His academic research has extensively explored the socioeconomic landscape of the Caribbean and its impact on education.
Dr. Smith’s early years were shaped in Enterprise Village, Chaguanas, in the county of Caroni, Trinidad and Tobago. He began his education at Presentation College, Chaguanas, before pursuing higher studies at The University of the West Indies. His professional journey initially began in healthcare, where he earned a Trinidad and Tobago Government Scholarship (1969–1972) and became a registered medical and surgical nurse at the Port of Spain General Hospital, qualifying in the Theory and Practice of Medical and Surgical Nursing. He later expanded his qualifications, obtaining a Diploma in Public Health Inspection in 1977 from the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (West Indies Division), followed by a Post-Basic Certificate in Food Inspection (1990) and a Post-Basic Certification in Insect Vector Control (1998), both from the National Institute of Higher Learning, Trinidad and Tobago.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has remained committed to the advancement of the social sciences, particularly in the areas of societal development and criminology. He has represented Trinidad and Tobago at numerous international academic conferences and has contributed extensively to research in his field.
As a devoted husband, father, and citizen, Dr. Smith continues to advocate for education, social progress, and community development. He is currently working on various publications, and his first published book, Passage of Time: My Early Life in Enterprise Village, Chaguanas – Reflections on Trinidad’s Development, offers a multidisciplinary exploration of history, identity, and cultural transformation in the Caribbean.
